A female Cardinal perched in front of a Maple tree. I thought the out of focus background was colorful and unusual. Taken yesterday in my back yard.

I live in Suburban Charlotte – lots of people, cars, and dogs in my neighborhood – yet this little fellow showed up about 3:00 this afternoon. I also saw his mama on the other side of my fence. The little fawn stuck around in my yard for 4 or 5 minutes before jumping the fence and rejoining mom. Makes your heart smile!!
The screech owl is one of the smallest owls at 9″ in length. It is relatively common around my home in North Carolina and does not migrate.
The hoverfly, while looking like a bee or wasp, is a harmless, beneficial insect in most gardens. A true fly, the camouflage helps protect it from birds and other predators.
I sort of like this high-key, minimalistic, type of photo. Maybe a bit of oriental simplicity? Diffusion was added in the post processing to soften up the subject.
I spent quite a while trying to identify this little beetle. I was surprised to find out it was a firefly and maybe the first firefly I’ve ever seen in the daytime.
